Choosing a category

Find category IDs and file your memes where people look for them.

Every meme lives in one main category (for example Gaming & e-Sports) and optionally one sub category inside it. Choosing them yourself is the single best thing you can do for reach: it decides which category pages and feeds your meme appears in.

List the categories

The category tree is public and needs no API key:

curl -X POST "https://backend.trollflix.com/api/php/categories/list" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{}'
Response (shortened)
{
  "success": true,
  "version": 1788243506,
  "super_categories": [
    {
      "id": 2,
      "tag_name": "🎮 Gaming & e-Sports",
      "slug": "gaming-e-sports",
      "description": "Gaming-related memes including popular games, e-sports events...",
      "sub_categories": [
        { "id": 2418, "tag_name": "🎮 Minecraft", "slug": "minecraft", "parent_super_category_id": 2 }
      ]
    }
  ]
}

Use a super_categories[].id as super_category_id, and optionally one of its sub_categories[].id as sub_category_id.

Cache it

Categories change rarely. Cache the list and refresh it when version changes, instead of fetching it before every upload.

What happens if you skip it

  • No super_category_id: Trollflix picks a category from your caption and hashtags. It works, but a human choice is more accurate.
  • No sub_category_id: Trollflix may fill it in from your caption, always within the main category you chose.
  • An unknown or retired super_category_id: the upload is rejected with content_category_invalid, so a stale cache never files your meme in the wrong place silently.
  • A sub category from another main category: the sub category is dropped and the meme is filed under the main category only.

Hashtags still matter

Hashtags in your caption (#minecraft, #programming) become the meme's tags. They power search and recommendations and can join you to a Meme Jam when they match one.
